Media Analysis: RBK Advert

The main colour which of the background is black and white which that suggests a more serious side of a person not hiding who they are. The font however, is in a graffiti style signifying this is targeted towards young people. On the right hand side there is a quote from 50 Cent "Where I am from, there is no plan B. So, take advantage of today because tomorrow is not promised." This may encourage young teenagers to buy the trainers as he is a celebrity so they have more trust in him. The picture of 50 Cent takes up half of the page of the background meaning that he is a significant part of the poster. The other half of the background are finger prints of both hands which may have connotations of past crime. This could be interpreted in the way that one half is his success whereas the other half may be his criminal past. 50 Cent's pose radiates power, dominance and masculinity. In the center the words "i am what i am" is written in big white font. This could be targeted towards those who have has a troubled past and are inspired to make a change in their lives. The dominant or preferred reading of the poster is for the audience to understand he has power and these trainers will help you succeed. The negotiated reading would be some people may like 50 Cent but other may not. The oppositional reading would be for the audience to see 50 Cent as something not worth their time or even a thug.

What different forms of media did you consume over the summer? Examples

Over the summer I use social media such as Instagram and snap chat and also reading news stories to keep myself up to date with the current affairs that were going on at the time. For example, Mother Teresa becoming a saint.


Define Print Media, Broadcast Media and e-media.When do teenagers come into contact with print media, broadcast media and e-media on a daily basis? Which do they use the most?

Print Media is any form of media that is publicised with paper.For example poster. Broadcast media is media made up of both radio and television where as e-media is media that uses electronics for the end user. For example the radio and internet.In my opinion,I think that teenagers mainly we e-media as they spend most of their time on social media such as Instagram, snap chat, twitter, facebook etc.




What audience gratification do teenagers receive from using Apps such as Snapchat and Instagram? Why do you think they are so popular with their target audience? What gratifications do they offer?

Teenagers (the audience) get gratification from using these apps because it gives them a chance to socialise with people and enjoy reading. This allows them to follow and share media. For example, they follow pages that they find interesting  such as following celebrities. Also, teenagers are able to produce their own media on these websites such as posting picture and videos. They are popular because it gives the teenagers something to look up to. For example, they may want to look like a certain celebrity so they work to look like that celebrity. 


Regarding the music industry, how has Media production and consumption changed over the last decade? (Think about the movement away from hard copies to streaming.) In your opinion, is this a positive shift? Justify your answer. 


In the music industry, the media production has changed over the last decade in many ways. For example, production has become more expensive and more focused on compared to back in the 80s, In my opinion, the shift is both positive and negative. Positive because the production has improved dramatically, however, negative in the fact that it has become more focused on sexualising women and men. Also back then there was less technology there were more hard copies and now there is more streaming. Media production has control over some artists, for example, they can control how they are presented in the media.


Julia Kristeva argues that no text is an isolated entity: ‘Any text is the absorption and transformation of another.’ 


Media language:

  • Intertextuality- when one media text reference another text. 
  • Synergy- when one media text promotes another text.
  • Convergence- Different types of Media platforms or technologies coming together.  
Use the below examples and explain HOW each one is an example of the term. 

INTERTEXTUALITY: In Disney’s Aladdin, the Genie character gets a crab caught on his finger. The crab is recognisable as Sebastian, a character from earlier Disney film, The Little Mermaid. Also, consider the Scream franchise and the Scary Movie franchise.


This is an example of intertextuality because it has made links of characters from one film to another. Another example could be in the Simpsons episode when Marge and her sisters are the three witches from Macbeth.



SYNERGY: Also Disney. When Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released last year, the marketing team released Star Wars merchandise in Wal-Mart stores and did a deal with YouTube and Google where the two companies modified their Apps and websites with pictures and colours associated with the film. 


This is an example of synergy because by doing this it is promoting both the film Star Wars and the use of youtube and google. Another example would be in MacDonalds when they advertise for new films such as Finding Dory they promote the film and the film promotes the happy meal.


CONVERGENCE: When Beyonce was starring in the films: The Pink Panther, Dreamgirls and Austin Powers, each time she released a music video with music from the film. 


This is an example because a clip from a film and a music video are different types of media, however, they are from the same source so the technology is coming together. Another example of this is in the film Harry Brown. Plan B (a music artist) plays the role of Noel Winters who was also in the video of the song End Credits.The music video has clips of the film. As a result, the film and music video come together.

Poster Analysis: Tomorrowland Festival

Image result for tomorrowland festival advertFrom the poster, the first thing that catches the eye is that it has various colours with young people cheering from this we can see that it is a festival for young people. The sky is an explosion full of confetti while all those under it are reaching for the sky.
This could symbioses dancing, entertainment, music and young people just enjoying themselves with each others company.

In the middle of the poster, you can see the Tomorrowland logo which is two wings beside one another which together make a butterfly. This could signify freedom and to let loose and even meeting new people all part of an experience. Above the wings is an eye which indicates all members are one. The words "SPREAD YOUR LOVE TO THE WORLD" highlight diversity and beauty as it involves all kinds of people from all around the world. Also in bold capital letters, it says "#TOMORROWLAND" which shows that this festival is targeted to young people as it has a hashtag meaning that it is a trend also shown through the twitter bird.
